RENEW International, a Catholic not-for-profit organization based in Plainfield, NJ, will hold its annual fundraising gala on June 6, 2019 at the Pleasantdale Chateau, West Orange, NJ.

“At this year’s annual gala, we will honor three wonderful individuals who demonstrate commitment to their faith through their service to others,” said Sr. Terry Rickard, O.P., RENEW International’s president and executive director. “Each of our honorees—Robert Thomson, Dr. Alice Beal, and Msgr. Richard Liddy—lives the values that are central to RENEW’s mission.”

The President's Award will be given to Robert Thomson, the chief executive officer of News Corporation. Thomson began his journalistic career in 1979 as a copyboy at The Herald in Melbourne, Australia and worked his way up to senior feature writer and later Beijing correspondent for The Sydney Morning Herald. He later was appointed editor of the London Times and became managing editor of The Wall Street Journal. Today, as CEO of a global print and digital media corporation, he is one of the world's most powerful newspapermen. He and his wife, Wang Ping, have two sons, Jack and Luke.

Dr. Alice Beal will receive the Spirit of RENEW Award. Dr. Beal is director of palliative care service for the Department of Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System, treating veterans, teaching nurses, physicians and students, and working closely with local hospices. In 2011, The American Cancer Society of Brooklyn acknowledged her outstanding contributions to hospice and palliative medicine and declared her a Woman of Excellence in the Field of Medicine. Alice and her husband, William F. Kuntz, have three children, William Kuntz Jr, Dr. Kate Kuntz Meleney, and Liz Kuntz.

RENEW will present The James L. Nolan Award to Monsignor Richard M. Liddy. Msgr. Liddy is the University Professor of Catholic Thought and Culture and the director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Seton Hall University. He is a Bernard Lonergan scholar and member of the University’s Department of Religion. The James L. Nolan Award honors individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service to the business community, the Catholic Church, and society. This award was previously conferred by the Woodstock Business Conference (“WBC”), which is now a part of RENEW as the Ignatian Business Chapters. RENEW willl present this award for the first time at this year’s gala.

The presentation of these awards will be the highlight of the gala: cocktails and silent auction begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and awards at 7:30 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the landscaped grounds and graciously decorated rooms of the Pleasantdale Chateau and enjoy the music of The Infernos Band in the ballroom.
