Why Catholic? and the Archdiocese of Boston

Cardinal Seán O’Malley, OFM Cap. and the Office for Worship and Spiritual Life sent the following letter to all Parishes and Pastors concerning Why Catholic? and how it will help parishioners on their journey toward enriching their faith.

Dear Pastor/Parish Administrator:

As we continue to celebrate the Easter Season and give thanks for the gift of new life in Christ, allow me this moment to share with you information about an opportunity to help our people in their journey with the Lord. Throughout the Gospels, we see numerous accounts of Jesus and his disciples praying, giving thanks for God’s many gifts, and living lives centered in faith. As Catholic Christians we have the same opportunities, but, as can be the case for many in our parish communities, at times need direction and assistance, to help us be more aware of God’s presence in our daily life.

In order to provide our parishioners the best resources for their faith development, the Archdiocese, in collaboration with RENEW International, is pleased to offer Why Catholic? Journey through the Catechism to all our parishes. I strongly support and encourage the implementation of Why Catholic, which connects Catholic teaching and Scripture to daily life through small faith-sharing groups.

Why Catholic? follows our established evangelization efforts in three important ways. It reinforces the success of ARISE Together in Christ by providing materials and training that support ongoing small faith-sharing communities. It complements Catholics Come Home by offering individuals an appealing way to reconnect with their faith and forge friendships in the parish. And, recognizing the diversity of our communities, it builds unity by way of program elements in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and materials in Vietnamese, Haitian Creole, and Lithuanian.

Please know of my gratitude for all that you do on behalf of the Archdiocese as you witness the presence of Christ and carry on the mission of the Church on behalf of those whom we serve.
Fraternally yours in Christ,

Seán Cardinal O’Malley, OFM Cap.
Archbishop of Boston
