Sr. Theresa Rickard, OP, Receives
Christian Leadership Award at
Eighth Annual American Bible Society Golf Benefit
Sr. Theresa Rickard, OP, president and executive director of RENEW International, has received the Christian Leadership Award from the American Bible Society (ABS). She was honored along with two other leaders in Bible engagement ministry at the Eighth Annual Golf Benefit, Driving for Bibles, sponsored by ABS on September 26, 2014 at Rockaway Hunting Club in Lawrence, New York.
The mission of the American Bible Society is to make the Bible obtainable in languages and formats that are understandable and affordable so that anyone may experience the Bible’s life-changing message. The focus for this year’s benefit was on ABS’s Global Ministries programs through which ABS partners with a global network of Bible societies to make Bibles available, encourage people to engage with the Bible, in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Most Reverend John J. Myers, archbishop of Newark, congratulated Sr. Terry and the other honorees. “I am delighted that Sr. Theresa Rickard, OP, has been chosen as the 2014 Catholic recipient of the Christian Leader Award granted to her because of her leadership in Bible engagement ministry,” said Archbishop Myers. “As president and executive director of RENEW International, a renowned Catholic ministry organization, she leads the charge in helping Catholics become better hearers and doers of the Word of God.”
Sr. Theresa and RENEW International support the engagement of Catholics with scripture, particularly through parish and diocesan programs offered by RENEW that encourage participation in small Christian communities. RENEW International’s programs, such as ARISE Together in Christ, WHY CATHOLIC? Journey through the Catechism, and Be My Witness: Formation for the New Evangelization (to be launched in Spring 2015), all place scriptural reading and reflection at the center of the spiritual renewal process. RENEW also has other resources that focus directly on Lectionary readings drawn from the Bible, such as Lenten Longings and Advent Awakenings. All of these programs have Spanish counterparts.
Sr. Theresa is a Dominican Sister of Blauvelt, New York. She holds the degree of doctor of ministry in preaching from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri and master’s degrees in divinity and religious education. Twitter users can follow her at @srterryrickard.
