ARISE Cookbook Effort Garners Volunteer Award
The third Season of ARISE Together in Christ is titled, "In the Footsteps of Christ" and focuses on the principles of Catholic Social Teaching. In the summer of 2010, participants at St. Julia Parish in Weston, MA responded to the call for action by creating and marketing a cookbook called Food for the Body and Soul, the proceeds from which were to go to Hearth, Inc., a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to combatting elder homelessness.
The goal was to raise $10,000 but sales far exceeded the goal. In a six-month period, the group sold over 1000 copies of the cookbook, and in March, Father George Evans and members of the “Cookbook Committee" presented Hearth’s CEO, Mark Hinderlie, with a giant check for over $14,000!
St. Julia ARISE is one of five recipients of the 2011 Outstanding Volunteer Award which will be presented at the Hearth Volunteer Appreciation Reception and Third Annual Resident Art Show on Wednesday,
A limited number of cookbooks are still available for purchase from the St. Julia parish website or www.hearth-home.org.
